Summer School Week for Commissioned and Licensed Ministers
At Christian Theological Seminary
July 14 – 18, 2014
“Sex and Marriage in the Bible and the Church Today”
With Dr. Rick Lowery
Rick Lowery will lead another transformative week of biblical exploration and application to today’s issues. We will examine biblical attitudes toward sex, gender roles, marriage, and family in their ancient economic, political, and cultural contexts. We will explore a number of key biblical texts, including ones often mentioned in discussions about social roles of women, sexual orientation, and abortion. We will compare the social-economic realities of the biblical worlds to those of our own and ask how or whether these ancient understandings of sexual ethics and family structure should function as sources for moral reflection today.
Richard H. Lowery teaches Hebrew Bible at Lexington Theological Seminary. He is on the faculty of Christian College in Georgia and lectures via webcast, podcast, and written word for them and for a variety of church ministries and educational projects. An ordained Disciples of Christ minister, he is a member of the Standing Commission of the World Council of Churches Faith and Order Commission. He is author of Sabbath and Jubilee and is writing a book on Genesis and human rights.
